The population of the tallest mammal in the world has decreased by 40% in the last 15 years. Giraffes are becoming endangered because of habitat destruction by humans. This is due in part to the fact that they are being hunted for their pelts, tails, and meat. Giraffes live in Savannah, Woodlands, and Plains of Africa. The giraffes are not getting a lot of public attention about their endangerment and we need to find a way to help. Not a lot of people really know about the giraffes’ endangerment. However, giraffes are not the only animals endangered: “The main media focus has been directed at equally worthy causes of protecting rhinoceroses and elephants, but has managed largely to overlook the decimation [wipe out] of the giraffes populations” ( Save Giraffes from Extinction ). A couple of interesting facts about giraffes include giraffes’ newborns are taller than most people, and no giraffes have the same spot pattern. They are unique animals that need our help from becoming extinct. Many people are trying to help the giraffes in Africa at this point, “Despite recent preventive measures from many African governments, such as restrictions on hunting, banning hunting in National Parks, closed seasons on hunting, introduction of license systems, people continue to hunt wildlife illegally,” according to Muller (Giraffes in Danger of Extinction: Why Their Numbers Have Dropped). There are many ways we can help the giraffes, like staying informed about the giraffes population, speaking up for wildlife, and you could adopt an animal in the wild and the money helps the endangered animals. Hopefully we can find a way to help giraffes from becoming extinct, so there can be many more giraffes in the future. |
